The fourth is just around the corner! In a few short days we will be celebrating independence day the only way we know how, gathering with friends and family for a cook out--am I right?! If you haven't already decided what to bring to this weekend's festivities then try out my freedom parfait recipe. It is super simple to make, tastes great and is oh so patriotic.

FREEDOM PARFAITS WITH CHIA JAM

RED+BLUE CHIA JAM INGREDIENTS:

freedom parfaits with chia jam

1c fresh strawberries, chopped

1/2c fresh blueberries

1/2c fresh black berries

2tbs chia seeds

*optional natural sweetener of choice until desired sweetness

PREP: Add berries into two separate bowls (1 for blueberry/blackberry combo and 1 for strawberries)  and mash well with a fork. Mix in 1 tbs of chia seeds and let sit for 15 minutes or overnight if desired. *add sweetener in this step if preferred

*assembling the parfaits is easiest when the jam has been refrigerated overnight, it thickens up and is more manageable. if you prefer a thinner, jelly like texture add less chia seeds and more fruit.

WHITE YOGURT INGREDIENTS:

1c plain Greek yogurt

1 scoop of GNC natural vanilla protein powder

1tsp cinnamon

PREP: Add all ingredients into a bowl and mix until well combined. Feel free to omit the protein powder and use a natural sweetener here (honey, stevia etc) or opt for vanilla Greek yogurt instead. I prefer the plain because I can control the sugar this way. GNC's natural vanilla protein powder is my absolute favorite, it has the perfect amount of sweetness for my taste buds so I don't find the need to add a natural sweetener.

Get to layering the ingredients here! I used individual ramekins here but if you are going to a party, I suggest a glass bowl or even one of those pretty glass trifle bowls. Once all ingredients are layered this dish will look like it was store bought.

I found that tilting the bowl on it's side helped tremendously with the vertical layering as shown in the image. if you have a large bowl you can add more layers which will add more stripes, i bet that would look awesome! Of course you can always go with the traditional horizontal layering effect--that's probably safer. you decide!

Enjoy the light show and be safe out there. Happy birthday America!
